“We talked in the writers room about what we wanted to bring to Lady Silence’s character. Our version of her is probably the biggest departure from the book. In the novel, she never has a tongue, so she never speaks. She functions in the book as a kind of, possibly mystical, possibly frightening ‘other.’ We wanted to turn her character into a full protagonist on her own terms, and not have her story subservient to any of the male characters. At the end of the novel, Lady Silence and Crozier marry and have children. We very strictly didn’t want her arc to be that she’s the wife or the girlfriend, or the lover of any of our characters. We didn’t want to simply use a female character as a sexual character or a romantic interest. We wanted to see if we could pull off a season of television where a female character didn’t have to engage on any of those levels: she was engaging with the story in a way that she’s Crozier’s equal as the season goes on. They are both captains who weren’t ready to be captains when they were promoted through this disaster, and they both lost their ships, and they both have to pay the price of that at the end of the show. If one wanted a final coda to a season of TV that was about unpacking the consequences of toxic masculinity, I think it’s a pretty provocative way to end the show, and it’s definitely not how the book ends.”— David Kajganich on Season 1 of The Terror (x)
Alright Terrors, hot take incoming!
There’s two things in this otherwise PERFECT show that i actively dislike, and the first one is, I hate Silna’s ending.
The first time i watched it, i was angry for days. I tried to appease myself, knowing that I had read the novel many times since maybe 2008 (I was not ecstatic about the novel ending, either, but i won’t elaborate on that unless someone asks me to lol)
So i thought, Silly you, this is fine, you also got upset when they left Tom Bombadil out of the LOTR movies.
BUT i randomly found this post by @orchiddingme and the post i’m reblogging right now, in less than 24 hours, and it sorta… clicked. I finally figured out why i dislike it so much. Silna deserved better.
yes silna deserved better and her ending felt wrong. and i think that was the point.
we can all agree that she didnt deserve being outcast and we as an audience are meant to cry injustice for her sake. none of this wouldve happened had the white men not come, and that silna had to pay for their wrongdoings only highlights that in reality, it’s the natives who ultimately suffer from colonialists’ interference. in an ideal story, all characters get the ending warranted to them, but if someone doesnt, then we should examine if in fact there was a point being made. sorry for being a dkaj stan but i do think this was absolutely intentional.
silna did absolutely nothing wrong but she is punished all the same. and we are Supposed to be angry for her.
welp I feel like, as time goes on, more and more of my interpretation of AMC’s The Terror (2018) comes back to the analysis of real-world Franklin Expedition history in Unravelling the Franklin Mystery: Inuit Testimony, which, I mean, tells a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT story but also is a story that is probably the most accurate one we have???? and absolutely one the writers were 100% aware of so here we go again
The reality is, two years after the men of the Franklin Expedition held a massive end-of-summer caribou hunt with the Inuit tribe that traditionally held King William’s Island to be their summer hunting ground, all those Inuit were dead.
They starved to death.
They starved to death because that massive end-of-summer hunt with the white men decreased caribou numbers so severely that, the next year, they weren’t able to put enough food away for the winter.
The men of the Franklin Expedition were trapped in a land that could not support those numbers, and they killed not only themselves, but the local inhabitants. Not through malice, not through disease, not through all the thousand common ways that imperialists manage to kill indigenous people throughout history, but simply because they were out of balance, in a world that had no margin of error. They were poison. They destroyed everything they touched.
That is the theme that runs throughout the show. The white men are poison, they destroy everything they touch – not through malice, but because they do not belong. They do not understand. They are in a land not their own, and they do not arrive seeking to make themselves of the land, they arrive seeking to make the land theirs. It does not work that way. The Arctic rejects them utterly, but by being there, by being where they do not belong, they corrupt utterly.
Silna’s ending was unjust because she pays the price for the mistakes of England. She is destroyed, not through fault of her own, but because the poison of the Expedition has touched her. That is the whole point. Just as in reality the Inuit paid the price for the presence of the Expedition, in the show Silna (and her father) pay the price.
It is satisfying, in a way, to watch the show and know that all these men will pay the price for their hubris (even if that payment is also deeply tragic, because it is mostly not the hubris of the individual men, but the hubris of their superiors that they must pay for). But a story that only meets judgement upon the imperialists would not be as complex or as inviting of thought as The Terror is. The world does not only punish imperialists. A story in which it punishes them and only them is no deeper than a revenge fantasy. The point of The Terror is that imperialism destroys everything – those who practice it and those who come in contact with it. It’s rot all the way down. Goodsir’s decency doesn’t save him. Fitzjames’ striving doesn’t save him. Silna’s attempts to right other people’s wrongs doesn’t save her. That’s. The. Point.
The innocent always pay.

every holocaust memorial day, i always ask people to keep romani people in their thoughts, but this year i’d like to clear up some misconceptions that i see every year w/ a psa
- romani people are not white. we’re south asian (from northern india), and each subgroup has a unique racial makeup of asian/white/etc, in different amounts. this is also why we vary wildly in physical appearance/skintone
- we still face oppression. what we face, especially in europe, can still be constituted as attempted genocide, as we’re forced to live in hazardous conditions or to give away our children, be sterilized, etc just for the crime of being roma
- the ‘g slur’ isn’t just an american issue. the reason some european roma prefer the slur is because, in many countries, there is no term for roma that isn’t a slur, and it’s either the g slur or the literal translation of the n word. i’m romanian, and if you used the slur in my hometown, you’d get slapped, since we just use ‘roma’.
- we live in every continent across the world. some of the largest romani populations exist in south america, predominantly in brazil. they are no more and no less roma than their european counterparts, and they, like romani in asia, africa, etc all face unique challenges and oppression.
we’re the largest ethnic minority in europe, and yet have almost no political power, no land ownership power (in some places, we’re forbidden from owning land entirely), etc. with very few reputable charities- a lot of us reject charity by principle, as well as there being a general lack of education about us- the best thing you can do to help romani people is to just spread information, and help individuals when you can.
Today, August 2, 2020, is Rroma Holocaust Memorial Day. On this day in 1944, 2,897 Rromani people were killed in the Z*geunerfamilienlager, or G*psy family camp, in the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. We remember them.
“The producer of a major MMO gives cryptic clues about future content by way of what t shirt he wears to announcements” sounds like some hardcore tinhat shit, but in the case of critically acclaimed MMO FFXIV, it’s just true and established fact
